Fans of Cirque du Soleil often say there’s a touch of the famous circus show in Cavalia. Not that it’s any surprise: Cavalia was created by one of Cirque du Soleil’s founders, Normand Latourelleone. But make no mistake about it. Cavalia is something entirely different, and the fact that it features both animal and human performers is just the start of it. As the show prepares for a brief stop in Denver, circus lovers from all over the state are already anticipating the experience.
Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Horse and Man combines the usual dancing, vaulting, and acrobatics with artful riding. Around half of the shows 100 or so performers are horses, trainers, and equestrians, sharing the spotlight with classical circus artists. The show is performed “Under the Big White Top,” North America’s largest tent, which spans over 26,000 feet (including the stage, seats and stables) and takes 45 trucks to move.
Animal lovers are sure to be moved by the intimate teamwork between the horses and human performers. The horse-trainer pairs have been working and training together for years, and one can easily feel their rapport in the unity and orchestration of their every step. All the horses practice only one hour per day and are given two hours for play; each one goes on stage for only a few minutes per show. They even have “understudies” so that all horses can have a day off.
Cavalia will be showing by the Pepsi Center in Denver, close to Chestnut and 5th Streets. The show starts on September 22 and will run until October 3. Regular tickets start at $35; there are also Horse Lover and Rendez-vous packages where one can be served pre-show meals and visit the Cavalia stables afterwards.
Cavalia is part Cirque du Soleil and part animal show; others say it’s equal parts fantasy, concert, and comedy. However you see it, the production is no doubt one of Canada’s fastest growing exports to the entertainment industry. To date, Cavalia has wowed more than 2.5 million viewers in North America and Europe, and is set to go even further. This year, the Montréal-based spectacle will be showing in San Francisco, after stops in Denver and Brossard, Quebec.
The brainchild of Normand Latourelleone, one of the founders of Cirque du Soleil, Cavalia features a series of acts by circus artists performing alongside specially trained horses. Over 50 horses are used in the shows, each one controlled by experienced riders who are also dancers, acrobats, and aeralists. The acts are accompanied by live music and carried out against an array of constantly changing backdrops.
Needless to say, Cavalia’s biggest draw is the impressive teamwork between horse and man. Also worth noting is its iconic “big white top,” the biggest tent in the continent, under which the shows are performed. At each stop, 40 employees work over 12 days to set up the tent and take another week to fold it up afterwards.
Cavalia will be in San Francisco starting November 16, 2010. The tent will be set up next to the AT&T Park, between Channel and 4th Streets, and will house shows until December 12. Tickets prices range from $45 to $240; the latter will include a Rendez-vous pass where one can tour the stables after the show.
Cavalia is returning to Brossard Canada July 21st under the Big White Top in front of Quartier DIX30. The show is scheduled to be in Brossard until August 22nd, but may extend the run if great demand exists.
The show is proud to return to Quebec to put on a horse spectacular like no other. This show is all about the 59 horses with 13 breeds total. The show also features 35 acrobats, dancers and riders who perform alongside or atop the animals or high in the air. This will be the last time Cavalia 1 is performing in Canada, Cavalia 2 is currenly in production and should be ready to debut in 2011.
